SMACHS Foundation is seeking a passionate and experienced Farm Manager to lead the daily operations of our exciting new urban agriculture initiative, the AGC Model Farm, located in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya.
About the AGC Model Farm:
The AGC Model Farm is a vibrant hub showcasing the power of sustainable agriculture. We aim to provide affordable, healthy, and locally grown produce to the community, educate youth on modern farming practices, and promote environmental stewardship.
About the Role:
As the Farm Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the success of the AGC Model Farm. You will be responsible for the overall management and day-to-day operations of the farm, ensuring its productivity and profitability. This includes tasks like:
- Land Management: Overseeing/doing land preparation, tilling, planting, and crop maintenance throughout the growing season.
- Production Planning: Implementing crop rotation strategies, selecting suitable varieties for the local climate, and maintaining detailed planting and harvest records.
- Pest & Disease Control: Implementing safe and sustainable pest and disease management practices to protect crops.
- Harvesting & Post-Harvest Handling: Leading the harvesting process, ensuring proper handling and storage of produce to minimize spoilage.
- Sales & Marketing: Directly selling farm produce at on-site markets or collaborating with local businesses to expand our reach.
- Financial Management: Maintaining accurate records of farm expenses and income, contributing to budgeting processes.
- Team Leadership: Supervising and mentoring any casual labor hired for seasonal tasks.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining meticulous records of planting schedules, harvests, yields, and other farm data.
- Innovation & Collaboration: Staying up-to-date on sustainable agricultural practices, and implementing innovative techniques to improve farm efficiency and productivity.
- Community Engagement: Participating in educational workshops and events, interacting with visitors, and fostering a connection between the farm and the community.
- Facility Maintenance: Overseeing/doing minor maintenance needs of the farm infrastructure and equipment.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in managing a commercial farm or relevant agricultural setting.
- Proven track record of success in sustainable and organic farming practices.
- Excellent knowledge of local crops, growing seasons, and pest management techniques.
- Strong understanding of basic farm machinery operation and maintenance.
- Experience in sales and marketing of agricultural products is a plus.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong recordkeeping and data management skills.
- Passion for sustainable agriculture and a commitment to community development.
- Be a youth aged between 25-32 years
